Profile of Nguyen Dinh Bao
Management Consultant, Political Voice
Nguyen Dinh Bao is a management consultant working in Toronto, Canada. His connection with the local businesses in Toronto inspires Bao to raise a voice against high tax rates and government intervention in the free market.
Nguyen Dinh Bao started his early career in mechanical engineering and technical education, but slowly engaged with commercial activities and development projects during his work for a research institute in Saigon, Vietnam. These projects shifted Nguyen to delving deep into the management field as he signed up for a bachelor programme in management at the University of Sunderland, UK.
Here Nguyen quickly absorbed contemporary economic and management theories, which would act as a founding guideline for his later works with many Vietnamese and Canadian firms. Nguyen’s researches and projects during 2013-2015 revolve around the free market mechanism and corporate governance methodology.
In January 2014 Nguyen joined Forbes Vietnam as a marketing intern, responsible for launching Forbes Vietnam Pass, an exclusive membership programme, and for organising Business Forum 2014, an economic forum bridging policy makers and business owners. The internship built Nguyen’s in-depth understanding of the South East Asia markets, as well as their top players and industries. He would use this knowledge to develop growth strategies and campaigns for his clients in Vietnam and Singapore later on.
While working towards his honours degree at the University of Sunderland, Nguyen worked for International Minh Viet (IMV) and I Can Read Asia to dig deeper in the East Asia chemical industry and education sector. During 2014-2016 Nguyen developed go-to-market strategies for Pigeon and Astalift product lines, launched Instax Mini camera products, implemented rebranding strategy for I Can Read in Vietnam and Singapore, and launched the I Can Inspire preschool programme in Saigon, Vietnam.
These collective successes from Nguyen and his team landed him a managerial seat in Savico, a lead firm in Vietnam automotive industry and real estate development sector. Although his delegation here lasted only for one year, Nguyen managed to pull off many significant projects to further complement Savico’s position as the top player in the auto industry.
The team and Nguyen organised a grandiose auto show in Can Tho, and another caravan tour across Vietnam right after that. The two initiatives brought in C$1.35 million from car sales and branded sponsorships for Savico and their associated regional dealerships.
Nguyen moved to Canada in late 2017 pursuing his post-graduate degree at Centennial College in Toronto, Canada. Here he met his first major barrier in his relatively smooth career, as North American markets play a totally different game compared to that of South East Asia.
Nguyen Dinh Bao sharply realised that Canadian medium sized companies were far more conservative than those from emerging markets in Asia, whom would take on any direction that leads to growth and profit. Canadian executives, in Nguyen’s opinion, are sceptical with new development and rely heavily on digital technology.
This conservative approach is a direct result from the high cost of operating a business in Canada. And also for the dependence on digital tech, Canadian professionals charge a top tier price for their hours, driving labour cost up in the air, and forcing executives to choose machines rather than humans.
For four years in Canada, Nguyen participated in many parts of the economy to explore the Canadian market characteristics, and to seek a solution for local businesses and new players to thrive in such a competitive landscape. Studied, worked, campaigned, and connected during 2017-2021, Nguyen’s appearance could be found in Torontonian marketing agencies, university campuses, retail shops, community organisations, political gatherings, to churches and acoustic concerts.
This period posed a challenge for Nguyen as he ought to develop strategies and implement them in the manner of days. The high operating and labour cost in Canada would skyrocket to five digits for those lagging behind.
The time spent researching at Centennial College in 2017-2018 has prepared Nguyen with advanced financial management tools, logistics management systems, negotiation tactics, and a critical understanding of using lawsuits as a business strategy. He then utilised these leverages in his work at EdKent Media, serving a diverse client portfolio, from auto dealerships to furniture retailers.
During his service for EdKent Media, Nguyen managed an annual advertising expenditure of C$2 millions, and yielded a 5X return on investment rate for most of his clientele. His growth strategy mainly focuses in building a solid customer base and establishing new revenue streams from new markets and new products. Amongst Nguyen’s top clients are the City of Toronto, Tridel, IG Wealth Management, 2M7 Financials, Cash 4 You, BioPharma, and Pace Law Firm.
With such an active role in the Toronto management consulting sector, Nguyen has joined many political campaigns and movements that seek to enhance the free market and encourage Canadian entrepreneurship. Initially it was to understand the will of the Canadian people, then Nguyen realised that political will is strongly attached to economic prosperity.
Nguyen acknowledges the Canadian interest goes hand in hand with business growth. Therefore he carefully adheres to the voices of those on the main street, not those autocrats governing the market from the above.
Throughout ten years of experience in the management consulting field, Nguyen has advised, developed, implemented, managed, and audited a complex portfolio of clients and industries, from top players to new entrants, from FMCG and automotive to professional service and higher education. Nguyen Dinh Bao highly values a free market and a limited government, believing these two factors combined will create much prosperity and wealth for the people.
